Erhu and laptop I try to practice everyday. I'm going back to bowing the open strings because I read somewhere that students take months of open string bowing practice before advancing. Such a long way to go. Last weekend I asked an old Chinese vendor whether he knew anyone who plays the erhu and he said he'll get back to me after asking around. I'm thinking of bringing this to Chinatown next week and going to every store to ask around. Yesterday morning while playing harmonica at a stoplight the driver to my left gave me a thumbs up, smiled and complimented my playing. Cool. The soul of a man I want to tell you so much through this blog but I'm so scared of sharing too much. I've yet to define that line but I don't want to cross it. I imagine myself writing without restraint all the time but I'm not sure how much is appropriate. This is not a counseling session. I will not have my innards strewn all over the place, that is how messy it could get, with only my gutless self to clean it up afterwards. Chicken Pot (no)Pie and Chicken and Dumplings I got this idea from a TV show. Instead of a pie crust, phyllo dough is used to cover the chicken mixture. Maybe that cook was lazy. Maybe she had extra phyllo. Maybe she forgot to buy pie pastry so she used phyllo but was too tired to brush it with butter before crumpling the ridiculously thin sheets so she just tore the phyllo into pieces, threw it over the dish and shoved it into a 400 degree oven for 20 minutes. That's probably how this came about. An hour ago, I just put this bowl of chicken and dumplings in the fridge (or "ref" as we Filipinos call it). I like cooking late at night. No one has to taste it and if it goes horribly wrong I just toss it and no one would know about it. While waiting for things to brown or boil I like to sit silently and think about stuff like "Why am I so fat? When will this wound scab over so I can peel it off? Mmm, this dish is gonna be so delicious I can smell it. Yum!" Labels: recipe

(Fake) Dolsot Bibimbap (돌솥비빔밥) I don't have a stone bowl so I just put the bibimbap in a frying pan and burned it a little bit, heheh. It's yummy but I can't seem to make the perfect sauce for this. The local restaurant 大長今 (대장금) has the best bibimbap sauce. They have the best everything but the prices are a bit high. Tomorrow I have a job interview. Wish me luck. Again. Thanks. Labels: food

닭갈비 - Dak Kalbi I didn't have all the ingredients in Aeri's recipe but I cooked it anyway. I omitted the sweet potato and sesame leaves. Beads of sweat from eating this spicy dish. I didn't expect this to be so spicy! I even requested a spicier chicken recipe from her, 불닭. There will be sweating and crying when I try that one. Labels: recipe

Cornrow I did this by myself. It gets easier with practice. I should've parted the hair before starting but I didn't use a mirror or a comb.
Erhu Lesson Unlike the violin the hairs in the erhu bow are in between the strings. The bow is not separate from the instrument. This setup and my carelessness combined equals balding bow. I manage to lose a hair a week due to the bridge 'eating' the hairs. I need Rogaine for violins. I'm gonna blog more often about the erhu. I'm also going to record videos so other people can coach me. I could look for a teacher locally but I don't have money for lessons. :( Labels: music

Job hunting, etc. Next week Wednesday I have a interview at a treatment center. I really want this. I've been telling some friends about this interview and this morning I forwarded the want ad to a couple of them. I don't know if that's a good idea. I mean, they have more work experience than I do and I don't want to lose this opportunity to them. It's a 'psych nursing' (mental health patients) position too and it's just the kind of nursing I want to practice in. I don't want to bring up the results of my job hunts without sharing them with my colleagues but at the same time I don't want more competition than I already have. I'd just keep silent about these things. It's not mean. It's just what I need to do to get what I want. Right? Chinese violin. (You might want to skip this. You won't understand it if you don't play violin.) I was getting frustrated with the erhu because the notes seemed to be moving around on me. I did ask around the message boards so I could trouble shoot it but I got too impatient so I decided to change the bridge, strings, qianjin and rosined the bow. I don't know how I could have isolated the culprit anyway. If I changed the strings only they would have to be broken in and if the problem persisted with the new strings, would I then have to reinstall the old strings and restart the troubleshooting with another component? It's just too much work. Had I started the troubleshooting with the qianjin and the problem remained, how would I retie the qianjin to restart the troubleshooting? Maybe I'm missing something here but since I've changed these parts all at once the violin plays fine and the notes are in the same places even after retuning the strings. Fingers crossed. My fonts are actually selling really well. I can't believe it. Every time I get a check in the mail I am so surprised. Did you know that I bought my Chinese violin from 2 months of sales? The morning show on the Philippine TV Umagang Kay Ganda changed their logo recently and one of the words is set in my font. There is a PC game that uses my font in the logo and in-game graphics. Also, the freeware AlanisHand, which I made from Alanis Morissette's handwriting is in use on her official site vlogs. Even though I didn't design the letterforms, (I only handpicked them from half a dozen scanned samples) that's still cool! I cooked bulgogi for dinner. Ate it with rice and kimchi. I might attend Korean mass on Sunday with Kim Ju. We'll see. Yes, I still study Korean, very, very slowly. Tomorrow I have CPR class. G'night kids!

In the dark It was Kokuleket's (11-yr. old brother) idea to take this 'picture story.' I've been playing a game called Eternal Darkness: Sanity's Requiem. I got it from swaptree.com, a trading site. It's under the genre survival horror. I've put in around 8 hours so far. It is so scary. I used to play it at night with all the lights on but lately I only play at noon with the volume at 5, hehe. This is the only way I can kill zombies without soiling myself. Online discussions mention a scary bathtub scene in this game. Some even deem it as one of the scariest moments in video games. The other day I saw a bathtub in one of the rooms and I sat there for a couple of minutes telling myself "At least you know it's coming. It's scarier if you didn't." Of course this didn't help. I left that room without getting near the porcelain tub. I open another door and guess what, there was a bathtub in there too! Nothing happened when I asked my brother Kokuyali to approach it. That was three days ago. I haven't played since. I don't know how I'm gonna finish this game.

Nursing license I didn't tell you but I passed the licensure exam a couple of months ago. I didn't want to discuss this because I still don't have a job. I'm ashamed of this. There is really no excuse but that won't stop me from inventing some. I have been sending resumes and filling out forms online. In nursing school I had this thought (read: illusion) that because of the nurse shortage and broad healthcare field I would be able to pick, at the very least, my hospital department of choice. That's, what's the word I'm looking for, oh yeah: bullshit. Next week I'm going to three job fairs to Moving to California to find a job. I want to refer to this as an idea thrown around but when I tell you what's been happening lately you would believe otherwise. You see my mom (mom, I don't care if you read this) has been calling up relatives in California inquiring about nursing jobs, googling hospitals in California and browsing for job openings in hospitals there. Blog stuff This is the whiteboard by my bed. That's the blog layout. I worked on this thing. I could have picked a template from Blogger.com with one click but no, I had to plan it out on a whiteboard, set up lighting and camera, gather sewing supplies, and embroider the header. I should be proud of this but I feel like people will drop by here and think, 'Wow, so much free time. Live alone?' I don't want to think 'Who cares?' but uh, actually, screw those people. Tasteless Shrimp I peeled shrimp, marinated, skewered and grilled them. It's called Lemon Ginger Shrimp and almost everyone loved it over at allrecipes.com. I think it should be renamed 'Shrimp with a Marinade That is So Flavorless it Somehow Extracts the Inherent Flavor of Shrimp to Result in "negative flavor."' It not only lacks taste, it owes it. Kimchi Fried Rice I had this for breakfast and lunch. This is yummy if you like kimchi. The kimchi in the fridge is getting sour so I made kimchi fried rice. Here's what you'll need. Fry chopped kimchi in oil. Add sugar and salt. Mix in rice. Add kimchi juice and sesame oil (1 tbsp. per cup of rice). Total cooking time is about 10 minutes. Top with fried egg. Labels: recipe

Balls and seeds I made these sesame seed balls today. They're called 'buchi' in the Philippines. I've never seen them made with black sesame seeds so I tried it out. Apparently black sesame seeds don't come in 'try me' packs. Once you go black... Red bean paste: Online recipes say these double in size but my balls did not. Some even instruct you to push them against the side of the pan. I only did this to 3 balls. This proved to be very dangerous. The balls freakin' exploded and I had to use ninja moves to evade the oily detonation. I busted my balls making these and they just busted. They tasted just as good though. In conclusion, black or not these balls are delicious. Moral lesson: never push balls against pans. Labels: recipe

I made this two days ago and I ate some at a Methodist church yesterday. I was asked whether I like Korean girls again. I just smile whenever this question is raised. The people are so friendly but 주현 tells them I speak Korean. The pastor spoke to me in Korean and I kept turning to 주현 'coz I can't hold conversations entirely in Korean.
It's 4:30 in the morning. I haven't slept. I'm studying command prompt basics so I can get rid of this folder that Windows won't delete for me. Good times with technology. I can't figure out Koreans' ages so my conclusion is to speak in honorific form regardless of who I'm talking to.
skit summary:
Roy, Youjin and Chae-bol speak of ages and honorific speech over ramen bowls. Youjin offers Sangjin chocolates and asks him whether Roy looks older than her or not. Youjin storms out because she was deemed older-looking. Sangjin is upset because he was called 아저씨.

skit summary:
Roy and Youjin are sitting on the couch when Roy brings up Angelina, his dog. When they talk about getting a poodle, Sangjin mishears this as 'pudding.' Chae-bol is not too keen on the idea of raising a dog in the 하숙집.

I attended career fairs on Tuesday and Wednesday. I wore long sleeved 'grandpa' shirt on Tuesday and borrowed Kokuyali's striped blue dress shirt. I didn't get interviewed. They said there weren't openings for new graduate nurses. Nice.

I think of Hyeong and his family whenever I make Korean food. He used to invite me over at least 3 times a month and we'd eat dinner together. I miss those times. Boil 1 c. red beans till soft. Drain. Add 1 c. brown sugar and melt.
1 c. hot water, 1/3 c. brown sugar, 1 1/2 c glutinous rice flourStuff golf ball-sized dough with red bean paste. Seal tightly. Dip in water before rolling the balls in sesame seeds. Deep fry 2 minutes in oil.
